ImageMedicare Part D is a federal program to subsidize the cost of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries. Prior to 2003, Medicare only covered hospital care (Medicare Part A) and doctor and out-patient care (Medicare Part B). In 2003, the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 became a law. As a result, in 2006 Medicare also provided coverage for prescription drug costs.
  
Medicare contracts with private insurance plans, and these plans provide prescription drug benefits to Medicare beneficiaries. This coverage is available as a prescription drug plan (PDP) if you have an Original Medicare Plan or included in some Medicare Advantage plans (MAPD).  To take advantage of Medicare Part D coverage, most people will need to purchase one of these private plans.
