In 2003, the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 became a law. As a result, in 2006 Medicare created Part D which provides coverage for some of your prescription drug costs. Medicare contracts with private insurance plans, and these plans provide prescription drug benefits to Medicare beneficiaries. This coverage is available as a stand-alone prescription drug plan (PDP) if you have an Original Medicare Plan or is included in some Medicare Advantage plans (MAPD).
