"There are no incentives for the overuse of cancer treatments because VHA physicians are not rewarded financially for prescribing more drugs or procedures," Keating explained. "The VHA also measures quality across a wide range of conditions, so there is a culture of quality improvement." The researchers pooled data from patients over the age of 65 who had been diagnosed with cancers of the lung and prostate between 2001 and 2004. They concluded that care for these conditions was of equally high quality, whether the individuals received treatment from VHA or Medicare-funded services. |

Older Americans who are turning 65 or older are often advised to do plenty of research on insurance for seniors before choosing a plan. Recently, researchers from Harvard Medical School compared the quality of cancer care provided by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and Medicare. The team published its findings in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.
