Seniors may want to think about getting hospital confinement plans

Seniors may want to think about getting hospital confinement plansFor seniors who are turning 65 or older, staying healthy is of the utmost concern because of the rising cost of healthcare. Many may be worried about the potential expenses associated with illness and hospitalization, since the cost of medical treatment is rising rapidly.

Deductibles, co-pays and out-of-pocket charges are skyrocketing, and being admitted as an inpatient can come with many non-medical expenses for patients and their families. Factors such as gas, meals and lodging should be taken into account.

Older adults may want to look into a hospital confinement plan, which can help cushion them financially should they become ill or injured. These plans can help cover some of the out-of-pocket medical and non-medical costs.

Such products "can help employees protect themselves from the financial risk associated with a hospital stay," said Susan Coffer, vice president for marketing and products at Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Company. "They can use the benefits to pay for medical expenses, as well as other expenses such as the mortgage, daycare and groceries that don't stop just because you're in the hospital."
