NCOA webinar discusses implications of budget cuts on low-income elderly AmericansThis week, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) hosted a webinar to analyze the implications of proposed budget cuts that could endanger the financial security of vulnerable older Americans. Potential targets include Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, all of which serve millions of disadvantaged elderly patients around the country.

An estimated 13 million older adults are living on an annual income of less than $22,000, and some experts say that the budget cuts could push them even closer to the poverty line. Many of them must already make decisions on whether to pay for food, shelter or medicine.

In order to address these concerns, the NCOA webinar discussed the needs of low-income elderly Americans and highlighted personal stories of struggle from these individuals. These testimonies were gathered through the organization's One Away video advocacy campaign.

CEO Jim Firman provided an overview of the situation and analyzed a recent poll that evaluated public awareness of the issues facing older Americans.

Also present were NCOA vice president of policy and advocacy Howard Bedlin, as well as Kellie Elliott Kapparos, a representative from the Iowa-based Heritage Area Agency on Aging.
