Their report, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, called for more intense education on how the healthcare system functions. The authors stressed the importance of knowledge about policy, from the economics of practicing medicine to the ins and outs of insurance for seniors. "As a resident, I routinely care for patients who cannot afford their medications or don't have access to regular medical care," said lead author Mitesh S. Patel.He added that these issues have a major impact on care delivery and cost, but they are hardly ever discussed in education lectures or during teaching rounds. According to co-author Matthew M. Davis, doctors who do not have sufficient knowledge of the healthcare system are "missing critical tools in their professional inbox." The researchers suggested that pilot projects be implemented at medical schools across the country, which would focus on healthcare systems, quality, equity, law and politics. |
