Seniors who are discharged to skilled nursing facilities after heart failure may have poorer outcomes

Seniors who are discharged to skilled nursing facilities after heart failure may have poorer outcomesOlder adults who have experienced heart failure and who require skilled caregivers after being released from the hospital tend to be sicker, according to a study published in the journal Circulation: Heart Failure. These patients are also at higher risk for poor outcomes and have a greater likelihood of being rehospitalized after one year.

Seniors with this condition are usually sent to a skilled nursing facility, but the treatment that they receive often varies. Additionally, they tend to face greater mobility problems and poorer in-home support, compared to those who do not receive care from such a facility.

The research team evaluated data on 15,459 Medicare beneficiaries.. They found that 14 percent of patients who were discharged to skilled nursing facilities died of any cause, compared to only 4 percent of those who went home after hospitalization.

"Patients hospitalized with heart failure are high risk to start with," said physician Larry A. Allen. "If they have to go to a skilled nursing facility, patients, families and providers shouldn't be under the impression that life will necessarily go back to normal."

He emphasized the need for providers to help patients and their families deal with these challenges and adjust their medical decisions accordingly.
