Nonprofit organization urges Congress not to change the current Medicaid system

Nonprofit organization urges Congress not to change the current Medicaid systemThe recently proposed cuts to Medicaid may be detrimental to the well-being of vulnerable seniors, according to nonprofit organization LeadingAge. This insurance plan may fill in an older adult's coverage gaps pertaining to long term care services, which are often not supplied by Medicare.

Approximately two-thirds of Medicaid spending goes toward coverage of assisted living and other types of elderly care, a fact that may not have been taken into account by the House of Representatives' budget proposal, LeadingAge claims.

Cutting funds for long term care may not only be harmful to seniors' health, but could also put many people out of a job.

"A loss or reduction in Medicaid coverage would shift the burden of long term services and supports onto elders and their families," the nonprofit stated. "Family members currently provide a large share of [this type of care] on an unpaid basis, but they also have substantial financial responsibilities for raising and educating children and saving for their own retirement."

The organization urged Congress to maintain the current Medicaid system and to oppose the creation of a block grant program, which could eliminate coverage for nursing home care for those who need it most.
