Physician assistant discusses importance of PCMH in addressing elderly careWith the passage of the healthcare reform law, doctors around the country have been implementing new models of care in order to ensure that patients have access to high-quality medical services. A concept such as the patient centered medical home (PCMH) focuses on optimizing care coordination and streamlining the efforts of multiple professionals - from doctors and nurses to pharmacists and therapists - in improving the health and outcomes of their patients.

The idea of collaboration between providers may be particularly important as individuals grow older and require long term care services, according to an editorial published in the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

Individuals who are turning 65 or older are joining the fastest-growing segment of the population, the report stated, and current estimates say that about 1 in 6 Americans will be in this elderly age group by the year 2020.

"Let's face it. There's a major problem lurking in our future," wrote physician assistant Sarah Zarbock in her editorial. "There aren't going to be enough beds in assisted living facilities for those who need them, nor enough healthcare personnel to provide the care."

She added that the PCMH model may be a major step towards addressing this problem, and that it could help support the burgeoning population of older Americans.
