The rapidly expanding population of elderly Americans could lead to a long term care epidemic for which only an estimated 10 percent of seniors are fully prepared, according to geriatric expert Marion Somers.
In order to raise awareness, she created a nonprofit foundation called 3 in 4 Need More, which was named based on the U.S. Department of Human and Human Services statistics that found that nearly three in four individuals in the U.S. over the age of 65 will need long term care services at some point in their lives.
The campaign aims to educate Americans about this growing issue and to encourage those who are nearing the age of retirement to prepare financially. Seeking different options in terms of insurance for seniors and getting help from policy advisers can help older adults prepare themselves for any medical needs they might have in the future. Somers will be joined by a documentary film crew this summer to capture the issue on camera. They plan on recording the real life struggles of the 44 million baby boomers who face significant challenges in simultaneously caring for elderly parents and their own children. |
