The new feature is called Physician Compare, and is designed to help beneficiaries easily and efficiently locate doctors who are participating in Medicare. "The [resource] begins to fill an important gap in our online tools by providing more information about physicians and other healthcare workers," said CMS administrator Donald Berwick. "This helps to pave the way for consumers to have similar information about their physicians as they have for nursing homes, home health agencies and health and drug plans."Doctors of medicine, osteopathy, optometry, podiatric medicine and chiropractic therapy are all included in the directory, along with many other types of health professionals. Consumers can easily search for nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, clinical psychologists and physical therapists, among other clinicians who routinely offer services to Medicare beneficiaries. Physician Compare includes a wealth of information on each healthcare provider, including gender, medical specialty, languages spoken and education history. Bewick said that the tool will help doctors and patients for decades to come. Such a resource can help facilitate the often daunting task of finding a qualified provider for older patients.
